Our President
Dean Kristen Boon brings extensive experience in academic leadership to this national role. Prior to joining the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law, as the inaugural Susan & Perry Dellelce Dean of the Common Law Section in April 2023, she served for 15 years as a law professor in the United States. During that time, she led institutional efforts in experiential learning, research and faculty development.
At the University of Ottawa, she emphasizes inclusive collaboration as the cornerstone of her leadership. She has also actively prioritized initiatives that ensure students receive a truthful and critical understanding of the Indigenous experience in Canada, and the complex role of law in shaping that history.
An expert in international law and contracts, Dean Boon’s legal career began as a Litigation Associate at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP in New York. She also clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada and served as a visiting academic in the legal bureau of Global Affairs Canada.
She looks forward to working with and coordinating policy amongst Canadian law Deans on matters involving legal education.

Our members
There are 25 law schools across Canada with 26 law programs: seven in the Western Region, nine in Ontario, six in Quebec and three in the Atlantic Region. Also, the University of Saskatchewan College of Law, in partnership with Nunavut Arctic College and the Government of Nunavut, delivers a four-year post-secondary law program that began in September 2017. The program aims to increase the number of qualified lawyers in Nunavut.
All of the law schools in Canada offer a professional degree in one or both of Canada’s two systems of law. These systems are the “Common Law” derived from the British legal system and the “Civil Law” inspired from French law. Common Law is the system of law in place in all of Canada’s provinces and territories other than Quebec. Civil Law regulates the private law of Quebec.
Canadian law schools offer a variety of programs: the juris doctor (J.D.) and traditional bachelor of laws (LL.B); professional degrees leading to the practice of law, graduate studies in law, and various joint programs. Many of the schools offer opportunities to study Indigenous legal traditions. Some offer their programs in English only, others in French only, while others offer partially or fully bilingual programs.
